Practical Experience Opportunities

A major emphasis of our program is providing real-life practical opportunities for our students to become practice-ready professionals.  Opportunities include:

Externships:

Belmont law students are encouraged to participate in the externship program to enhance their legal knowledge and skills while earning academic credit.  Many students have obtained summer or full-time employment from externship sites.  Externships are a great way to incorporate the classroom knowledge into real-world opportunities.

Practicum Courses:

Every semester every Belmont student is required to register for a practicum course.  The practicum courses are designed to help students become proficient in the “practice” of law.  The practicum courses allow students to become proficient in all aspects of the practice of law such as legal writing, legal research, client interviewing and counseling, litigation, negotiation, and other specialized areas.

Field Placements:

The College of Law offers students the opportunity to work at two field placements that are supervised on-site by licensed attorneys. These field placements expose students to the actual practice of law, while allowing them to apply the skills they have learned in the classroom.  Currently students can participate in field placements with the Tennessee Attorney General and the Tennessee Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts.
